The J.H. Hawes Grain Elevator (built 1904) - Atlanta, Illinois
In Atlanta, Illinois, off the historic Route 66 is the J.H. Hawes Grain Elevator. It was built in 1904, and abandoned in 1976. In the 80's it was considered too large a fire hazard to remain, but citizens protested, causing its restoration and listing on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a Victorian era, heavy timber structure that now has a museum operate around it.
