New Orleans: Saint Louis Cemetery Number 1
This is inside Saint Louis Cemetery Number 1 in New Orleans. It the oldest of 3 Roman Catholic cemeteries with the same name located around the city. All graves are above ground, as is customary for the region (due to water the water table and French/Spanish influence). The cemetery opened in 1789 and is located one block outside the French Quarter.
Some notable people who were buried here include Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau, Homer Plessy, and Etienne de Boré (first mayor of New Orleans).
