Close View: Inside a Cave on a Cliff Over the Ohio River - (Cave in Rock, Illinois)
In Hardin County, all the way at the bottom of Illinois is a cave on the side of a cliff overlooking the Ohio River. It used to be referred to (in the early 1800's) as the "Ancient Colony of Horse-Thieves, Counterfeiters and Robbers." The cave has a long history of hideouts for criminals, "pirates", and other outlaws.
Samuel Mason (formely an office in General Washington's Revolutionary Army) turned the cave into a saloon in 1797. From there, he would send criminals to lure boats to the area, offering guidance or help, then disable their boats and rob them...or worse.
It is about 55 feet wide, I believe.
