This is said to be one of the most photographed and filmed castles in the world. A picturesque landmark in the Western Highlands of Scotland, it is located on an island where three sea lochs meet.

Its history goes back to the 6th century as inhabited, but it wasn't fortified until the thirteenth century where it served as a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and the Clan Macrae. The castle was partially destroyed during a Jacobite uprising in 1719 and was rebuilt by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap.

It is said that the castle is named after Donnán of Eigg, a Celtic saint who was martyred in 617.
